[ Dave Birch ] Fascinating evening debating the future of money with the members of the Real Time Club . I had a great time, was kept on my toes and forced to think hard and fast by Malcolm Cooper and the assembled throng. I certainly learned that in future I have to think things through a little better, but it is enjoyable being challenged in this...
[ Dave Birch ] I just filled out my US customs form, sitting on a plane heading into JFK. I ticked the box that said I had less than $10,000 in cash or in monetary instruments (I’m not sure what those are, but I didn’t have any). But I did have a splendid new pre-paid card that I was planning to test in US terminals as part of a project...
[ Dave Birch ] I had a couple of queries from journalists about the up-to-date statistics for payments in the UK, so since I went and looked them up to be exact, I thought I’d share the answers with everyone. Here are the questions I was asked following being quoted in The Telegraph and The Times over the last month. First of all, how much...
The European financial crisis has sent shockwaves through the global economy and has a number of ramifications for the international trading sector, especially souring products from China via ecommerce platforms. [ Dave Birch ] I wonder if this means something. In the last couple of months I’ve been invited to a couple of meetings where the topic of alternative currencies and wind power (and other renewables) has come up. I’m starting to think there might be something in this. One of the problems that windpersons have to deal with is that they...
Nike has made quite an impact with its new “Write the Future” campaign . [ Dave Birch ] Henry VIII is quite famous to many people, primarily because of his ground-breaking approach to marriage and his pioneering work on interfaith relationships, but he’s famous to me because of his economic incompetence. [ Dave Birch ] Is it immoral to pay someone in cash? At Mobile Money Services in Africa in Johannesburg, Brian Richardson from Wizzit said that he refuses to pay anyone in cash, from employees to domestic staff. This reminded me of a conversation at a bank a few weeks ago. I was talking about Faster Payment Service (FPS) and I mentioned that I’d...
